The rhinoceros weighed more than a ton of solid muscles and thick hide. The ground shook in sympathy to its thudding gallop.
Rearing so high, Kong misjudged the unfamiliar beast’s ferocity. He shifted his feet. The rhinoceros altered course, blundering into one black-haired ankle with overpowering momentum. The lowered horns struck forcefully.
Staggered, Kong’s great arms flew up, and the galloping rhinoceros circled back around, ramming the back of the opposite foot with his horned skull.
Like a bristling black tree, Kong fell, slamming onto his leathery-skinned chest, caught entirely by surprise. Back on Skull Mountain Island, the dinosaur fought face-to-face. This bulky creature did not fight like any of those familiar foes.
Snorting wildly, the rhinoceros charged back and forth, then made a beeline for Kong’s skull. Its intent was clear. It was going to butt Kong’s head with all his muscular might.
The giant anthropoid rolled over. A monstrous hand descended, seizing the rhinoceros in mid-stride. Momentum carried the rhino along for perhaps eight yards, then Kong picked the snuffling beast off its feet, and shook it angrily, roaring wildly.
To the rhinoceros, this was an entirely new experience. An elephant or perhaps a hippopotamus was capable of uprooting him. Nothing on the earth could lift him off his feet with impunity. To the low brute’s simple mind, this was against the natural order of things.
Kong struggled to his feet, shook the rhinoceros, slapped it with his free hand, and seemed uncertain whether to bite into its thick greyish side or simply pummel it into submission.
The thing felt heavy in Kong’s padded palm. He shook it again, brought it to his great nostrils, sniffed it with interest. Then he began squeezing inexorably.
