His body just hadn't caught that clue yet. The alien didn't seem to care. Tomlin fell to his knees and tried to convince his body to move. His eyes looked where the thing had been just a moment before and he saw it well enough in the torrential rain-a ghost that was exactly solid enough to have water splash off of its body.
