- My heart was in my mouth as the abhuman collided with Tom. It all happened so fast that I didn’t see whether or not the point of the blade made contact with the target – the only point on the creature’s body that would guarantee its immediate death.
- But the charge and weight of the abhuman knocked Tom clean off his feet and they fell together, the beast on top of him.
- Crying out with fear for him, my heart pounding, I dashed forward, desperate to intervene and save Tom.
- But I needn’t have bothered myself. The abhuman was dead. The blade of the staff was buried right up to the hilt in its forehead and had pierced its brain. Tom was lying underneath it, moaning softly, his eyes closed. I seized his wrists and started to drag him clear. That done, I knelt beside him and began to stroke his face and whisper in his left ear.
- After a moment or so, to my relief, he opened his eyes and smiled up at me before he began to cough. His struggle for breath went on for some time and I began to fear that he would choke, but at last the spasm ceased and he took a deep breath.
- ‘I haven’t lost my touch, have I?’ he said, sitting up with a grin splitting his face. ‘Thanks for softening it up.’
