A sapphire beam converted the floor by D’s feet to steam and ions. D
didn’t so much as flinch.
“Why are you the only one who’s fine? Weren’t we . . . humans made in
the same fashion? How come we’re the only ones . . . who must die? . . . ”
There was a sound like something shattering, and the teacher collapsed
on the floor.
