Who remembers Deepwater Horizon? It was the name of an offshore rig associated with the worst maritime oil spill in U.S. history. The disaster began in April 2010, with the explosion of British Petroleum’s drilling platform, Deepwater Horizon, while extracting oil in the Macondo field near-ish Louisiana. The explosion immediately killed 11 people and injured another 17. The oil spill and its environmental effects spread east, harming wildlife, businesses, and homeowners, from Mississippi all the way to the west coast of Florida, on the far end of the Gulf.

Several years later, British Petroleum changed its name to BP, due to the reputational risk and infamy of its brand.

Now, BP has a new venture in the Gulf of America: the Kaskida field.

The U.S. Dept of Energy and my 47th President should carefully consider whether BP is the right choice for drilling the Kaskida field. Are there more accessible sites to exploit first? Have other petroleum majors (including America’s own Exxon or Chevron) been consulted?
