- He opened the door, and sprang out into the patio. His horse was only a few feet away. But there were men in the patio, men who believed what had been said of Don Diego Vega and who knew Fray Francisco, and they were determined men now, prepared to forget Don Diego's station and punish him as they would have punished any other man.
- Don Diego did not draw blade again. His whip sang through the air as he charged forward. Its stinging lash drove back the two men nearest.
- Then Don Diego was close to his horse, and got into the saddle. The whip sang again, as a man would have grasped the reins.
- "Aside!" Don Diego called.
- They fell back as he wheeled the horse at them. A pistol was drawn, and the whip curled out to flick it out of the man's hand. Don Diego jumped his mount over the low patio wall, thus avoiding the gate where some had gathered. Into the bright moonlight he galloped, leaving a chorus of howls behind him.
