When the man didn't move, Ajax clenched his teeth. "I'm not asking, fucker."

Instead of complying, a red laser light came out of the helmet, the shoulder apparatus extended upward on a metal arm, and rotated toward Ajax. As it passed Tom it momentarily blinded him.

"Dad, get down!" Tom shouted.

Years of following military orders kicked in and Ajax dropped just before a blast of heat hit where he'd been standing, destroying everything around it. The counter exploded, shards of glass and chunks of wood pelting him where he crouched on the floor with his arms instinctively covering his head. Misshapen boxes of ammunition, their contents destroyed, were flung in all directions, thudding painfully onto Ajax's arms and back.

"Eat this!" his son screamed as he came up from behind the register with a .50 Desert Eagle.

The first round hit the costumed man in the shoulder and knocked him backward at an angle, where he staggered to the right of the shattered door. Tom fired again but his target was down and rolling to the right. Ducking below the counter, Tom tracked him through the glass, hoping for a money shot as the asshole rounded the far end. He saw Tom fire again, then his wife charged out of the office with an AR-15 rifle and right into the killer.

"Lana, no!" Ajax scrambled toward her and slipped

fragments on the floor. He slipped and fell hard, fingers smashing against broken glass beneath the stock of the shotgun, at the same time one knee took a deep, three-inch gouge from a jagged chunk of wood; the old soldier in him slammed a mental wall between the pain and his brain and he kept going, clawing back to his feet as he heard his wife's two shots.

When he was finally upright again, he was sure she'd ended the guy-no one could survive two point-blank 5.56mm rounds. It wasn't until he was able to focus past Tom that he realized Lana wasn't standing there.-pg.380-381 chpt.14
