Jaya fired first, a precision pyromantic strike. A thin blade of flame to burn a hole in Liliana’s chest. Jace doubted whether or not Liliana ever saw it coming. She didn’t have to. Faces, indistinct and semi-transparent but with mouths open wide in silent screams, emerged from the Chain Veil and just barely managed to deflect Jaya’s strike. The fire ricocheted off their lightless mana and splashed against the pyramid’s stones.

These ghostly emanations, Jace knew, were the Onakke spirits that possessed the Veil and had designs on the necromancer, as well. But these spirits had never operated this way before. Liliana had never allowed it. Jace scowled, concluding that Bolas’ hold over Liliana had somehow freed her to release the true power of the Veil.
