  "articleBody": "Students from IE School of Politics, Economics, and Global Affairs recently traveled to the heart of the Amazon rainforest in Colombia to gain some hands-on experience in sustainability and conservation. The trip aimed to give students a unique insight into some of the challenges facing local communities in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.The trip was organized in collaboration with the Omacha Foundation and gave students the opportunity to see the environmental, social and economic challenges facing local communities, and the work being done to tackle them. IE University professor and trip organizer Manuel Quiros accompanied the students. He said the trip represented an amazing opportunity for IE University students to reconnect with nature and also to apply some of their skills and knowledge to enhance the local economies.The group’s base for the trip was Puerto Nariño, a municipality on the bank of the Amazon. During their nine days there, students took part in a wide range of activities centered around building their understanding of sustainability. These included swimming with pink dolphins, planting trees as part of a reforestation project, and attending a workshop on natural inks that are cultivated in the area. The interaction with local communities, and being in contact with nature, was incredible. I really recommend this experience for everyone. Trip participant Antonio Barreiro, Master in International Relations student.Participant Avaani Singh reflected that combining her in-class studies with this kind of experiential learning is essential to understand the issue of sustainability and make a positive impact: It ties in perfectly for the future in looking at what’s really important in a bigger picture, and how we can bring that all together to start focusing on those little things that end up mattering in the end. IE University is committed to educating tomorrow’s leaders in sustainability, and has formed partnerships with a broad range of global organizations that are leading the way in climate action. This experience was organized in collaboration with the Omacha Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and conserving the diverse ecosystems and species that are found in the Amazon. They have formed strong ties with the local communities and educate them in sustainable practices, enabling them to become a crucial part of conservation efforts. The collaboration with the Omacha Foundation is just one example of the ways in which IE University incorporates environmental education and sustainable learning as a key part of its curriculum. Fernando Trujillo, the Foundation’s scientific director, welcomed the collaboration and the input from students. For me, it’s essential to work with students. That’s where passion, heart and desire to do things are shaped.These activities form a crucial part of the curriculum, providing students with the kinds of insights and perspectives that aren’t possible inside the classroom. Combining theory with hands-on, practical experiences leads to a well-rounded, comprehensive education that has a transformative impact on students’ personal and professional lives.",
