- By analyzing the source material, historian Rafael Palma infers that the document only proves that Jose Rizal retracted his membership as a Mason, however, he did not convert to Catholicism as each act is independent of each other. Rafael Palma also infers that the document does not show that Jose Rizal retracted his political beliefs. It is speculated that the document may have been obtained via means of moral violence and spiritual threats.
- There exist, an autobiography of Josephine Bracken, that shows that Jose Rizal and Josephine Bracken was married under Catholic rites. Upon further scrutiny, the penmanship between the letters of Josephine Bracken sent to Jose Rizal and the penmanship of the autobiography appears to have significant difference that makes it illegible as evidence for Jose Rizal's embracement of Roman Catholicism.
