Moonlight spilled through the trees. Dappled patterns spilled across the cracked dirt road, but the light faded as the path fell away, not daring to wander off the road. This path was rarely traveled; even the animals seemed to avoid this place. Yet here was where they'd decided to meet--a monster and a monarch, watching each other and wondering who would make the first move.

One of them was as tall as a redwood, with forked antlers rising from his forehead and eyes that burned like hot coals. His claws were sharp enough to cut through steel; his teeth could shatter stone; his black scales were hard as diamonds. He was a creature of legends and nightmares in equal measure. And yet there was something regal about him. He held himself with the quiet stillness of someone assured in his own power.

The other's face fell in shadow, obscured by her hood. Only her calculating eyes were visible, gleaming as she looked up at the creature. Her armor shone with the same light; she seemed out of place here, all sharp angles and straight lines against the wildness of the forest. She broke the silence first, her quiet voice cutting through the cold midnight air. "You seem tired," she said.

That caught him off-guard. He managed to recover quickly, flashing a grin. "You assume that I can feel such a thing. I'm not human like you... your majesty," he replied, a hint of mockery in his voice.

"But you were." It wasn't a question--it was a statement, leaving no room for argument. She took a step towards him, and now he saw the frustration buried behind that cold facade. "You _were_ human, and now you're a monster. How?"

He stared down at her. Even now, when she was certainly trying to present her best image, she couldn't get rid of the coppery scent of blood. "Continue what you're doing, and you'll become one soon enough."

Her expression shuttered as she told him, "I already am."
