The pilot drove the boat, and the copilot handled the slicks. Slicks were a new kind of deflector shield that used jets that created a kind of plasma envelope around the hull. The plasma charge was high and when something came too close it would nudge it out of the way, allowing it to slide down the outside of the energy field.
