  1. 12 The prince did not let compensation be in question,
  2. nor did the kinsmen get a head-price at all;
  3. he said they should expect an excessive storm
  4. of grey spears and Odin’s wrath.
  5.
  6. 13 The chieftains go to the sword-meeting
  7. which they’d set up at Logafell;
  8. the peace of Frodi was torn between the enemies;*
  9. corpse-eager on the island ran Odin’s hounds.*
  10.
  11. 14 The prince sat down, when he’d killed
  12. Alf and Eyiolf, beneath Arastein,
  13. Hiorvard and Havard, the sons of Hunding;
  14. he’d brought down all of spear-Mimir’s clan.*
  15.
  16. 15 Then a light shone from Logafell,
  17. and from that light came lightning-bolts;
  18. wearing helmets at Himinvangi [came the valkyries].
  19. Their byrnies were drenched in blood;
  20. and beams blazed from their spears.
  21.
  22. 16 Immediately he asked from the wolf-lair,
  23. the prince asked if the southern ladies
  24. wished to go home with the warriors
  25. when night fell; the elm bows were shrilling.
  26.
  27. 17 But from her horse, Hogni’s daughter,
  28. —the shield-din was over—said to the prince:
  29. ‘I think we ought to have other business
  30. than drinking beer with the breaker of rings.*
  31.
  32. 18 ‘My father has promised his girl
  33. to Granmar’s fierce son;
  34. but, Helgi, I call Hodbrodd
  35. a king as impressive as the kitten of a cat.*
  36.
  37. 19 ‘The prince will come in a few nights
  38. unless you challenge him to battle
  39. or seize the girl from the warrior.’
  40.
  41. 20 ‘Don’t be afraid of the slayer of Isung!
  42. first there’ll be noise of battle, or else I’ll be dead.’
  43.
  44. 21 The all-powerful one sent messengers from there,
  45. through air and sea, to assemble his army,
  46. ample river-fire he offered*
  47. the warriors and their sons.
  48.
  49. 22 ‘Tell them quickly to go to their ships
  50. and to be ready to sail from Brand-island!’
  51. There the prince waited until there came
  52. huge numbers of men from Hedins-island.
  53.
  54. 23 And there from the beaches at Stafnsness
  55. they pushed out the ships graven with gold;
  56. Helgi asked Hiorleif this:
  57. ‘Have you inspected the impressive young men?’
  58.
  59. 24 The young king spoke to the others—
  60. it would take time to count off Crane-bank
  61. the long-necked ships beneath the sailors,
  62. journeying outwards on the Orvasund:
  63.
  64. 25 ‘Twelve hundred trusty men;
  65. though in Highmeadow there’s twice as many,
  66. the king’s war-troop; we may expect battle din.’
  67.
  68. 26 So the leader ordered the prow-tents dismantled,
  69. roused the crowd of warriors,
  70. and the fighters see the day-break;
  71. and the noble men hoisted up
  72. the well-sewn sail in Varinsfjord.
  73.
  74. 27 There was the splash of oars and the clash of iron,
  75. shield smashed against shield, the vikings rowed on;
  76. hurtling beneath the heroes
  77. surged the leader’s ship far from the land.
  78.
  79. 28 Then it could be heard: they’d met together,
  80. the sister of Kolga and the longships,*
  81. as mountains or surf might break asunder.
  82.
  83. 29 Helgi ordered the high sail to be set,
  84. his crew did not cringe at the meeting of the waves,
  85. when Ægir’s terrible daughter
  86. wanted to capsize the stay-bridled wave-horse.
  87.
  88. 30 And Sigrun above, brave in battle,
  89. protected them and their vessel;
  90. the king’s sea-beast twisted powerfully
  91. out of Ran’s hand near Gnipalund.*
  92.
  93. 31 So in Una-bay in the evening
  94. the splendid ships were floating;
  95. and the others in person from Svarinshaug*
  96. with troubled minds came to look at the army.
  97.
  98. 32 Gudmund asked, divinely-descended,
  99. ‘Who is that lord who leads the troop,
  100. who’s brought the dangerous men to shore?’
  101.
  102. 33 Sinfiotli said—he’d slung on the yard-arm
  103. his red shield, the rim was all of gold;
  104. he was a sea-lookout who knew how to answer
  105. and how to debate with the princes:
  106.
  107. 34 ‘Say this evening, when you’re feeding pigs
  108. and calling your bitches to their slops,*
  109. that the Ylfings have come from the east,
  110. eager for fighting to Gnipalund.
  111.
  112. 35 ‘Hodbrodd will find Helgi there,
  113. the prince who never flees, amid his fleet,
  114. a man who’s often sated eagles,
  115. while you were kissing slave-women at the grindstone.’
  116.
  117.
  118. - Poetic Edda, Helgakviða Hundingsbana I
