- From somewhere off in the forest the hoot of a second Kong came, and at the sound Khaan scrambled down the tree, dropping the last few feet with a heavy thud. “That was Krom,” Taigu told Khaan — who probably knew very well which Kong had given the signal. “Time to put the food into the pack.”
- Khaan helped scoop everything in and arrange it so the net wouldn’t spill any, Taigu tied the mouth of the net closed, and then the Kong shouldered the load, almost as large as himself, and bent under the weight. “Is it too much for you?” Taigu asked in the special language of the Zantu. The Kong gave him a reproachful look and a pitiful kind of grunt, but it was all in play. Taigu laughed. “Of course, it isn’t! Let’s go.”
