- So stealthy was this creature that Kong did not feel its cool touch until the thing had affixed itself to him, and began to settle in.
- The sounds of Kong sleeping were varied. Grunts, snuffling snores, even an occasional groan. These last might have been the product of submerged hunger pangs.
- When Kong awoke, it was sudden. His eyes snapped open and their amber depths took in his surroundings. First, he saw only blue sky.
- It dawned on his drowsy mind that he could not breathe. This was a new experience.
- Then he noticed a tightness in his throat. Another new experience.
- Sitting up, Kong looked about to see what had gotten hold of him, what powerful animal had seized him by the throat.
- But he beheld nothing. Nothing lay in sight.
- Still unable to breathe, Kong pulled himself clumsily to his feet, and stood swaying. A choking sensation clogged his throat. His lungs seemed paralyzed.
- Turning completely about, long arms flailing blindly, he sought what manner of monster was cutting off his breath.
- As he did so, his massive fingers reached for his throat, and encountered something elongated and muscular. It was hairless to the touch, the hide scaly yet smooth.
- Growling, Kong seized it with both hands and began exerting pressure.
- Briefly the thing resisted, but the power of Kong’s anthropoid arms was too great and he wrested it free, overwhelming its constricting embrace.
- Suddenly, Kong was holding in both hands a writhing, twisting serpent, as long and powerful as anything he had encountered back on Skull Mountain Island.
- It was a massive python. And it had wrapped itself about his thick-muscled throat, although for what certain purpose was hard to fathom. Kong could not be consumed by its yawning maw, no matter how much it dislocated its massive jaws.
