Tarzan wore slung across his back a hide quiver of feather-fletched arrows, and he unlimbered his bow.
Aiming for the center of the brute’s leathery barrel of a chest, the ape-man sent one missile flying. It struck, penetrated, but not very deeply.
Making quizzical sounds, the creature looked down, saw the feather-tufted shaft protruding, and his eyes narrowed in annoyance. Plucking at it, the beast dislodged the thorny annoyance, and lifted the sharp end to his broad nostrils.
Smelling his own blood, the bull vented a snarl of anger and flung away the offending thing. He was otherwise unfazed by the arrow.
Tarzan was not surprised. The jungle lord had half-expected his arrow to have little effect. For the first shaft had been merely a test of the brute’s resolve.
Methodically, he began stringing fresh arrows, loosing them at his antagonist in a steady fusillade.
The first two were batted aside by a massive paw. A third, aimed at the vulnerable tissues of the monster mouth, splintered harmlessly against an age-yellowed fang.
The bronzed giant redoubled his efforts, swiftly emptying his quiver, knowing that those long, swinging arms could not keep up the pace of combat.
Quickly, one of Zu-jar-bolgani’s blocking arms bristled with missiles. They resembled mere quills. Some, the ape-man had dipped in the venom of a viper he had encountered along the way.
Grunting in pained surprise, the animal brought up his opposite paw. Blunt, broken-nailed fingers encountered the stinging things sticking up from his fur. He began twisting them out and flinging them away, at the same time smacking his forearm to staunch fresh blood.
Observing this without outward concern, Tarzan saw that his arrows had so little effect that they were but a useless gesture. Not even the deadly viper venom was potent enough to bring the alien gorilla low. He dropped his bow to the ground, having no further use for it.
