  1. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘What way is there to heaven from earth?’
  2.
  3. Then High replied, laughing: ‘That is not an intelligent question.
  4. Has no one ever told you that the gods built a bridge to
  5. heaven from earth called Bifrost? You must have seen it, maybe it
  6. is what you call the rainbow. It has three colours and great
  7. strength and is built with art and skill to a greater extent than
  8. other constructions. And strong as it is, yet it will break when
  9. Muspell’s lads go and ride it, and their horses will have to swim
  10. over great rivers. That is how they will advance.’
  11.
  12. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘It does not seem to me that the gods built
  13. the bridge in good faith if it is liable to break, considering that they
  14. can do as they please.’
  15.
  16. Then spoke High: ‘The gods are not deserving of blame for this
  17. work. Bifrost is a good bridge, but there is nothing in this world
  18. that will be secure when Muspell’s sons attack.’
  19.
  20. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘What did All-father do then, when
  21. Asgard was built?’
  22.

  25. The third root of the ash extends to heaven, and beneath that root
  26. is a well which is very holy, called Weird’s well. There the gods
  27. have their court. Every day the Æsir ride there up over Bifrost. It is
  28. also called As-bridge. The names of the Æsir’s horses are as
  29. follows: best is Sleipnir, he is Odin’s, he has eight legs. Second is
  30. Glad, third Gyllir, fourth Glær, fifth Skeidbrimir, sixth Silfrtopp,
  31. seventh Sinir, eighth Gils, ninth Falhofnir, tenth Gulltopp, Lettifeti
  32. eleventh. Baldr’s horse was burned with him. And Thor walks to
  33. the court and wades rivers whose names are:
  34.
  35. Kormt and Ormt and two Kerlaugs, these shall Thor wade
  36. every day when he is to judge at the ash Yggdrasil, for
  37. As-bridge burns all with flame, the holy waters boil.’
  38.
  39. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘Does fire burn over Bifrost?’
  40.
  41. High said: ‘The red you see in the rainbow is burning fire. The
  42. frost-giants and mountain-giants would go up into heaven if
  43. Bifrost was crossable by everyone that wanted to go. There are
  44. many beautiful places in heaven and everywhere there has divine
  45. protection round it. There stands there one beautiful hall under
  46. the ash by the well, and out of this hall come three maidens whose
  47. names are Weird, Verdandi, Skuld. These maidens shape men’s
  48. lives. We call them norns.
