- The two main religions in Japan are Shinto and Buddhism, both of which are practiced by many people. It is believed that up to 80% of the population participates in Shinto rituals, paying respects to ancestors and spirits at private altars and public shrines. About the same number would be Buddhism. Before the arrival of the Shinto state in the 19th century, the union of these two Shintos was widely practiced in Japan.
