- The Sutra of the Buddha's Teaching of the Supreme Ocean Samadhi, as spoken to his disciple Subhuti:
- Thus have I heard. One time, the Buddha was dwelling in the land of Jambudvipa, surrounded by a great assembly of monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen. In the midst of this assembly, the Buddha spoke to his disciple Subhuti, saying:
- "O Subhuti, listen well and attend to my words, for I will now reveal to you the mystery of the Supreme Ocean Samadhi.
- "This samadhi is a state of supreme realization, in which the mind is free from all attachment and delusion, and is able to rest in the perfect peace and clarity of the present moment. It is called the Ocean Samadhi because, just as the great ocean is boundless and limitless, so too is this samadhi boundless and limitless in its scope and power.
- "To enter into this samadhi, one must first cultivate the four immeasurables: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. These four immeasurables are the foundation of the Ocean Samadhi, for they enable the mind to be free from all attachment and aversion, and to rest in perfect equanimity and peace.
- "Once the four immeasurables are cultivated, one must then practice the six perfections: giving, morality, patience, effort, concentration, and wisdom. These six perfections are the branches of the Ocean Samadhi, for they enable the mind to be free from all defilements and distractions, and to rest in perfect clarity and understanding.
- "Through the cultivation of the four immeasurables and the practice of the six perfections, one can enter into the Ocean Samadhi and realize the supreme truth of the Buddha's teaching. This truth is the emptiness of all things, which is the realization that all phenomena are devoid of inherent existence and are ultimately impermanent and interdependent.
- "Through the realization of this emptiness, one can attain the state of Buddhahood, in which all suffering is overcome and all beings are liberated from the cycle of rebirth. This is the fruit of the Ocean Samadhi, the ultimate goal of the Buddha's teaching.
- "O Subhuti, if you wish to enter into the Ocean Samadhi and attain the state of Buddhahood, you must practice these teachings diligently and with great effort. Only then will you be able to realize the supreme truth of the Buddha's teaching and attain the ultimate goal of enlightenment."
- Thus spoke the Buddha, and the assembly was filled with wonder and joy at the profound teaching of the Supreme Ocean Samadhi.
