- lecomte
- nice, but pretty much identical to the gsg one it seems
- content wise
- gsg one goes deeper I think
- catche
- but if he's a dreamworks lighting artist, he might have some more insight in to things
- like how to technically do artistic things etc
- if that makes sense
- I imagine it might be artistic at times, and not just technical
- I remember jeremy birn's lighting tutorials on gnomon from around 2009-2012 -ish
- pixar lighter
- they were great, cause he had the knowledge and went into when and why use what for different purposes
- there's a lack of those types of tutorials I feel
- lecomte
- yyyeah i've never seen a proper lighting course
- its always about the basics
- also, this is more about redshift if you look at the topics
- also, come on, they're all from dreamworks and pixar
- look at digital tutors
- everyone has worked on spiderman
- or marvel movies
- theres definitely a lack of technical lighting tutorials, but I dont think this is one of them
- the only one that has a bit higher level is grant's course, but we all know how that ended
- catche
- true, many people have been involved in those shows(edited)
- i never finished grant's
- lecomte
- neither did he
- catche
- hehe
- did like what I saw though
- lecomte
- grant had some good work, he worked at a good commercial studio as well
- catche
- some one uploaded it to youtube, probably illegally, and i shamefully watched it
- lecomte
- but it was only for print based projects, he didnt do animation
- but he got lost on the business side of things
- catche
- fight with his brother i read
- lecomte
- got his boxing passion confused with 3d
- yeah that too
- lawsuit etc
- catche
- messy
- i can see how that takes the motivation out of you
- lecomte
- its a million dollar business
- catche
- crazy
- lecomte
- yeah definitely
- all about timing
- he filled the vray gap
- and everyone jumped on it
- catche
- he was really good though
- lecomte
- yeah until he wasnt
- his vray course is irrelevant now
- catche
- learned a lot
- yeah well, mostly
- lecomte
- alot of it is about the sampling and that has changed
- catche
- he did update the sampling one
- lecomte
- the rest is just basic knowledge
- yeah well still
- its pretty much a slider now
- catche
- two
- lecomte
-
- catche
- max subdivs + noise threshold
- lecomte
- I remember at the studio I worked at, all the ADs said 'this is the way to go' cause grant said it
- as if he was some kind of guru
- catche
- what i'm hoping rs will become soon
- lecomte
- cause nobody knew
- he seemed well respected
- so lets do exactly what he says we should do
- catche
- for sure he was/is
- lecomte
- then someone from chaos group was like oh n o
- thats not the right way
- you should just use the universal settins
- catche
- eh
- lecomte
- and everyone was like wtf
- he just put the max subdivs to 2048
- catche
- i followed that period
- 100
- lecomte
- that was so weird
- catche
- was the universal settings
- lecomte
- oh yeah that
- sorry been a while dont remember the specifics
- you remember the chaos group guy saying that?
- catche
- yep
- lecomte
- then at the end, nobody knew what to believe, I think they still dont know what the best way is
- catche
- but not that they corrected grant, and then saying "just go universal instead"
- lecomte
- and honestly
- neither do I
- catche
- the way I remember it, universal came before grant
- lecomte
- well they didnt correct him specifically, but it contradicted what grant said
- catche
- I think many people just went universal until grant came, kinda
- lecomte
- maybe they said it before, but there was a youtube vid from that guy afterwards
- who said there was alot of confusion about it
- and that these universal settings should work best in most cases
- this was before automatic sampling
- catche
- and it was with grant's explanation and understanding of the dmc sampler that made chaos group add the "shading rate" parameter, which emulates all the stuff grant was tweaking manually
- lecomte
- yeah true
- and then it still wasnt really clear
- its still vague
- catche
- what exactly?
- lecomte
- its this thing where you think you get it
- and youve got it figured out
- and then someone comes along
- and says something, and it renders faster
- with less noise
- and you're all screwed up again
- and youre like damnit, I had it
- catche
- heh yea
- lecomte
- leave me alone
- hahah
- catche
- they did end up with the default of 6 after a few releases
- which is supposed to be tried and tested over and over and over
- lecomte
- yeah
- catche
- and that's where like 99% of scenes are the most efficient
