  1. Kong dimly perceived beating wings in the pounding rain, and in his simian mind, he understood that the frightened bird was seeking the nearest tree known to him.
  2. Perhaps that one would offer a suitable shelter. Roaring his rage, shaking one dripping fist, Kong followed in the wake of the fleeing bird, his mind fixated on one thing: relief from the remorseless rain that was beating at his spirit as had nothing before in his experience.
  3. For the first time since he had usurped the terrible demon-lizard Gaw, Kong knew what it felt like to be merely another inhabitant of a jungle, and not its absolute monarch.
  4. The bone-white egret bird beat its wings through a shifting curtain of rain, and soon vanished from view.
  5. Kong shambled after him, walking with the stooped-over hunch that was his natural posture and mode of locomotion. The grass under his feet felt cool and slippery, making for an unpleasant carpet. Stubbornly, the simian colossus plodded along.
  6. Overhead, a rumble of elemental warning stirred the low-hanging thunderheads. Somewhere, the dull boom resounded. Then another. Sky thunder.
  7. Kong understood what those natural sounds portended. Growling in resentful alarm, he shuffled along faster. Lightning was a force he could not battle. It struck and was gone, leaving its unfortunate target obliterated without mercy. It was another reason why the beast-god had taken up residence under the brooding granite dome of Skull Mountain.
  8. Through the obscuring rain curtain, a towering tree with a great leafy ball of entwining branches showed dimly. With an eager grunt, Kong aimed for it. The trunk was massive, its crown sufficient to protect any who sought shelter beneath it.
  9. No doubt the fleeing egret was already safely ensconced within its greenery.
