But though stronger than any carnosaur limb ever known, her arm strength was no match for that of a bull Kong. The Kong immediately pinned his opponent’s arm back, finally acquiring the leverage to drive Gaw head first into the ground with the force of a crashing mountain —
The earth beneath the giants gave way. They dropped twenty feet, into what had been the great domed room that Ishara had found. The antagonists smashed into the stone floor, the ceiling stones collapsing around them, forming an enormous crater.
Ishara cried out, “No!” and ran toward the giants before Kublai seized her.
“Are you insane! Stay here! You’ll be crushed like an insect, you fool!”
“Don’t you understand?” Ishara cried, collapsing in his arms. “They’ve destroyed everything! It’s gone! Our last hope of recovering the knowledge from the past to save our people is gone!”
“We have to get away from here while we can! Come!” And with that Kublai dragged a devastated Ishara away from the epic battle for the rule of Skull Island.
Half-buried in rubble, the two combatants lay momentarily stunned. Kong’s arm had been pinned under Gaw’s “body. As Gaw began to writhe uncontrollably, three of her huge dorsal spines finally found their mark, ripping gashes into Kong’s chest as the great carnosaur scrambled to her feet. Kong, too, rose as Gaw lunged, barely having enough time to catch Gaw’s head as the great jaws snapped within inches of his jugular. Kong clamped a vise-like grip around the jaws as they closed, but the impact drove him against one of the curved walls. The sharp spiked cranium of Gaw bloodied his arms and hands as it ripped free of the stunned giant’s grip.
The saurian closed in for the kill, but Kong snatched up a stout, jagged object–the broken thighbone from some long dead creature that had been mounted there–and thrust it like a sword. Some of it shattered against Gaw’s armored body, but a thick shard pierced the creature’s side — and she flinched away, screeching. Then she leapt, not trying to kill Kong this time — but seeking escape. She made the edge of the opening the two had created and scrambled to haul herself out.
Kong seized a long stake, perhaps once used to brace the roof that no longer stood. With “With an angry bellow, he rose to his feet — his shoulders and chest now projected above the lip of the opening. A hundred feet from Kong, on the opposite side, Gaw still struggled to escape the cavity.
