Acquaintances

Time has drawn a curtain between us-
Severing the closeness,
Rearranging our dreams.
Memories keep our friendship alive
Reminding us of how much we've lost,
How deep the chasm between us,
How quickly promises of undying love
Can die.
Once we were friends;
Now we are acquaintances
Wearing smiles that hide the look of
Loss in our eyes.
We stare at the past, fearing
Tomorrow because of what we've let
Slip away today.
