  1. King Gylfi was clever and skilled in magic. He was quite
  2. amazed that the Æsir-people had the ability to make everything
  3. go in accordance with their will. He wondered whether this could
  4. be as a result of their own nature, or whether the divine powers
  5. they worshipped could be responsible. He set out to Asgard and
  6. travelled in secret and assumed the form of an old man and so
  7. disguised himself. But the Æsir were the wiser in that they had the
  8. gift of prophecy, and they saw his movements before he arrived,
  9. and prepared deceptive appearances for him. When he got into
  10. the city he saw there a high hall, so that he could scarcely see over
  11. it. Its roof was covered with gilded shields like tiles. Thiodolf of
  12. Hvinir refers thus to Val-hall being roofed with shields:
  13.
  14. On their backs they let shine — they were bombarded with
  15. stones — Svafnir’s [Odin’s] hall-shingles [shields], those
  16. sensible men.
  17.
  18. In the doorway of the hall Gylfi saw a man juggling with knives,
  19. keeping seven in the air at a time. This man spoke first and asked
  20. him his name. He said it was Gangleri and that he had travelled
  21. trackless ways; he requested that he might have a night’s lodging
  22. there and asked whose hall it was. The man replied that it
  23. belonged to their king.
  24.
  25. ‘And I can take you to see him. Then you can ask him his name
  26. yourself.’
  27.
  28. And the man turned ahead of him into the hall. Gylfi followed,
  29. and the door immediately shut on his heels. He saw there many
  30. apartments and many people, some engaged in games, some were
  31. drinking, some were armed and were fighting. He looked around
  32. and thought many of the things he saw were incredible. Then he
  33. said:
  34.
  35. ‘Every doorway, before you go through, should be peered
  36. round, for you cannot know for certain where enemies may
  37. be sitting waiting inside.’
  38.
  39. He saw three thrones one above the other, and there were three
  40. men, one sitting in each. Then he asked what the name of their
  41. ruler was. The man who had brought him in replied that the one
  42. that sat in the lowest throne was king and was called High, next to
  43. him the one called Just-as-high, and the one sitting at the top was
  44. called Third. Then High asked the newcomer whether he had any
  45. further business, though he was welcome to food and drink like
  46. everyone else there in the High one’s hall. He said that he wished
  47. first to find out if there was any learned person in there. High said
  48. he would not get out unscathed unless he was more learned, and
  49.
  50. ‘Stand out in front while you ask: he who tells shall sit.’
  51.
  52. Gangleri began his questioning thus:
  53.
  54. ‘Who is the highest and most ancient of all gods?’
  55.
