Functional programming is a way of writing computer programs that uses math. It's like a special way of building a house, where you use only blocks and never have to worry about how to put them together.  Functional programming uses functions, which are like recipes that take ingredients and make something new.  These functions are special because they always make the same thing if you give them the same ingredients.  They also don't change anything outside of themselves, like a recipe that only uses its own ingredients.
