  1. [Doctor Number Four] /me couldn't figure out how to register for the PSAT and missed it
  2.  [Xyzzy] Probabilistic Satisfiability?
  3.    [Doctor Number Four] Preliminary SAT
  4.    [Doctor Number Four] or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
  5.      [Doctor Number Four] ^the reason I needed to take it
  6.    [Xyzzy] Enjoy the spare time and then go for the usual SAT?
  7.      [Xyzzy] #misthread
  8.      [Doctor Number Four] I'm registering for the SAT now, but I still want to take the PSAT so I can get a scholarship maybe
  9.         [Xyzzy] Mmm...
  10.       [Doctor Number Four] I qualified last time I took it, in sophomore year
  11.       [bluebird] yeah, regular SAT means you don't get considered for National Merit. which is about scholarships
  12.        [bluebird] generally only PSATs feed into that
  13.      [Doctor Number Four] :(
  14.    [Xyzzy] So, the registration deadline for the PSAT is over, but it itself not?
  15.      [Doctor Number Four] yes
  16.      [Doctor Number Four] there's a few other test dates
  17.     [Xyzzy] If so, you could try begging the mercy of the responsible people, or start repenting.
  18.     [bluebird] this is a national systemic thing, so, local school administrators can't really do anything
  19.      [bluebird] otherwise, that's a good general strategy : )
  20.     [Xyzzy] Then he can start repenting.
  21.     [Doctor Number Four] I didn't have to register last year, I just figured i wouldn't have to this year
  22.     [Doctor Number Four] And now I won't be going to university.
  23.    [Doctor Number Four] :(
  24.    [Xyzzy] You can always sell your soul for loans.
  25.      [totallyhuman] that'll happen either way
  26.       [Xyzzy] With a scolarship, something lesser, the firstborn child or something, might have sufficed.
  27.       [totallyhuman] mm
  28.     [bluebird] well, that does not necessarily follow. about not going to uni
  29.     [bluebird] still lots of options and methods open
  30.     [Xyzzy] My point exactly.
  31.     [bluebird] it isn't the end of the world for uni
  32.      [bluebird] and you may still be able to get on the PSAT/NMS track, too
  33.      [Doctor Number Four] hope so
  34.    [Doctor Number Four] Yeah, I guess I could move to Northern Europe.
  35.      [Xyzzy] Or Northern Europa! >:D
  36.      [Doctor Number Four] not without a degree. :(
  37.        [Xyzzy] We always accept auxiliary janitors.
  38.        [Xyzzy] I could train you to do IT stuff or something.
  39.        [Xyzzy] We usually only accept highly skilled young children because adults are somewhat hard to fit through the wormhole, and interplanetary rocket launches to hitchhike on are too seldom, but I could try tugging some strings.
  40.      [Doctor Number Four] t'would be cool tho
  41.     [Doctor Number Four] or numerous other places
  42.       [bluebird] not even : )
  43.       [bluebird] but y not, if you want?
  44.     [Doctor Number Four] come to think of it
  45.       [bluebird] heh
  46.   [Doctor Number Four] /me doesn't know what to do
  47.    [Xyzzy] Brute force might be an option, if you have a finite amount of variables.
  48.    [bluebird] talk to a guidance counselor asap
  49.    [bluebird] sometimes there are late registrations possible, though there may be fees
  50.      [Doctor Number Four] after official test dates?
  51.      [bluebird] no. before
  52.      [bluebird] when are they
  53.      [bluebird] also sometimes you can register to take them at another school or district that still has them coming up
  54.        [totallyhuman] actually...
  55.        [totallyhuman] some districts might take it later
  56.        [totallyhuman] maybe i'm not sure
  57.         [bluebird] yes, that's reasonable
  58.        [bluebird] ok, for the PSATs, looks like those are the only 3 dates nationally.
  59.        [Doctor Number Four] ye
  60.          [bluebird] go knock on the counselor's door before period 1, or get a note to leave class to go, i'd suggest
  61.        [bluebird] the SATs tend to have a lot more dates, and different ones in different districts
  62.        [Doctor Number Four] i don't go to another district
  63.         [Doctor Number Four] i go to this one
  64.         [Doctor Number Four] isn't that a problem
  65.        [bluebird] no, not usually
  66.        [Doctor Number Four] oh thank god
  67.          [totallyhuman] ye how do you think homeschooled kids do it lol
  68.          [Doctor Number Four] good point
  69.          [bluebird] sometimes a uni or a community center will sponsor a test. so it's not always affiliated with any one school
  70.           [bluebird] you could probably take one in texas if you really wanted to
  71.           [Doctor Number Four] there's no "register for the psat" option on collegeboard
  72.          [bluebird] there is an 'order now' link, at least for the educators/admin
  73.            [Doctor Number Four] yeh, that would be for getting test materials, not registering
  74.            [bluebird] i know, but it suggests they can still order the items
  75.            [Doctor Number Four] good point
  76.            [bluebird] one more word of advice--
  77.            [bluebird] clear your saturday calendar!
  78.            [Doctor Number Four] MHM
  79.            [Doctor Number Four] DONE
  80.            [bluebird] 👍
  81.        [bluebird] certain standardized tests are supposed to be open to anyone, you just have to register ahead and tell them where you'll be taking it
  82.           [Doctor Number Four] ahead
  83.         [bluebird] though some you can actually register day-of. for SATs, at leasat
  84.           [bluebird] *least
  85.           [Doctor Number Four] ye I'm registering for that now
  86.      [Doctor Number Four] today
  87.        [bluebird] oh
  88.        [Doctor Number Four] they were today
  89.        [bluebird] so they are over at your school center, and you didn't get to take them today
  90.         [Doctor Number Four] Primary test day: Wednesday, October 11
  91.                              Saturday test day: October 14
  92.         [Doctor Number Four] alternate test day: Oct 25
  93.         [bluebird] guidance counselor email. asap. now.
  94.         [Xyzzy] NOW!
  95.         [totallyhuman] ye dude
  96.           [totallyhuman] there's still a good chance
  97.          [totallyhuman] ...come to think of it, i should've just taken it on the alternate day myself
  98.           [totallyhuman] i'm super jet lagged
  99.            [totallyhuman] i almost fell asleep during
  100.          [bluebird] were yours today, too?
  101.          [totallyhuman] yeah
  102.          [bluebird] oof. i agree, that's a bit rough
  103.           [bluebird] maybe you should ask a counselor about it, too. for maybe the 25th. or even sat. if the dates are the same
  104.           [bluebird] how do you feel you did, though?
  105.           [bluebird] sometimes you can kind of tell
  106.           [totallyhuman] i think i'm fine
  107.          [bluebird] /me nods
  108.        [bluebird] or go to their office if you are still at school
  109.        [bluebird] call and leave a message, the old-fashioned way, even : )
  110.        [Doctor Number Four] email sent
  111.        [totallyhuman] goo
  112.          [totallyhuman] d
  113.            [totallyhuman] >.>
  114.          [Xyzzy] ...Was about to ask.
  115.            [totallyhuman] goo
  116.          [bluebird] add to @WorkBot: !work !play !sendemailtoyourguidancecounseloraboutpsatsNOW
  117.          [Doctor Number Four] :)
  118.      [bluebird] ok. look into taking them in another region or district. it's about transportation and stuff, then.
  119.       [Doctor Number Four] everybody took it today, I'd think
  120.    [bluebird] @DoctorNumberFour, maybe they can help send in a letter or something explaining you've recently moved and are getting acclimated, or something
  121.     [Doctor Number Four] ...maybe. I was already going to talk to them
  122.   [totallyhuman] oh shit
  123.   [totallyhuman] your school didn't do it for you?
  124.  [Doctor Number Four] no
  125.  [Doctor Number Four] they didn't
  126.   [Doctor Number Four] this thread^ is why this community is the coolest possible group of online friends to have
  127.     [Doctor Number Four] supportive, helpful, understanding
  128.     [Xyzzy] I never thought luring people into precarious employment on Jovian moons was *that* cool.
  129.     [Doctor Number Four] :P
  130.     [Doctor Number Four] I would gladly tolerate the commute if it has god pay :P
  131.     [Doctor Number Four] good*
  132.       [Xyzzy] godlike*
  133.       [Doctor Number Four] /me would totally accept that
  134.     [Xyzzy] It's more of a “move here once, stay here forever because of the impossible NDA-s”.
  135.      [Xyzzy] Accommodation, food, water, public air recycling are cared for.
  136.      [bluebird] so you have to handle recycling private air yourself?
  137.        [Xyzzy] Air recycling is public*
  138.        [bluebird] sounds like a reasonable deal : )
  139.      [Xyzzy] The accomodation can be a chamber just inside the outer hull, though, which most people there abandon for huddling together for warmth and not-freezing-to-death.
  140.      [112358Daniel] Is the nickname for those chambers' residents 'penguins'?
  141.         [Xyzzy] Nah, they don't have the fancy suits so common among penguins.
  142.        [112358Daniel] Good point
  143.        [112358Daniel] Do they have a nickname?
  144.        [Xyzzy] When/if anyone remembers them, they're the peasants.
  145.         [112358Daniel] Oh, what is your rank?
  146.         [Xyzzy] Not-peasant.
  147.           [112358Daniel] Sounds good
  148.         [totallyhuman] sounds fun
  149.     [Doctor Number Four] mm. less appealing, but I'll take it, as it seems to have internet
  150.    [bluebird] :D
  151.  [112358Daniel] /me offers hugs
