  2. The camera toppled backward, providing a partial view of the single parahuman at the epicenter of it, only partially in frame. It was apparent she was taller than the buildings around her. Some of those buildings were five stories tall, at least. What was visible looked like sheets of black crystal and rolling carpets of fine grey-green smoke that looked soft from a distance, but revealed themselves for what they were near the base, near the camera, as they broke apart into clouds and curling wisps.
  3.
  4. Head not in picture, but she did twist slowly, hips rotating, upper body rotating more, as she took in her environment. Her silhouette was only barely human now.

  8. The screen showed a distant view of the others. Kronos, turned to look to one side. The fuming titan, now visible at her full height. Maybe six or seven stories tall, small compared to the others, her head more like a cowl or hood of black crystal, no face visible beneath, with the gas leaking out resembling long hair left to drape out, tumbling down her front until it dissolved.

  11.
  12. A massive figure, hunched over, black-bodied, with golden hair running down the spine, moving as if billowing in a wind that wasn’t actually there. Hands extended down to the ground, arms overlong with more of that gold hair from elbow to wrist. It bore a crown that took over part of its face, that looked like something between hair in the wind and gold, many-pronged. Below that crown, there was only a mouth, corners downturned.

  14. “Victor,” she said, naming it before she’d even fully comprehended what she was seeing. She turned to Moonsong, angry, “Was this the Red Queen?”
  15.
  16. “No.” It was Tribute who had answered. “No, it’s… I felt it. The pull, the tug. I almost…”
  17.
  18. “Almost what!?” Scribe cried out, angry. Their ‘ride’ wavered in the air.
  19.
  20. “Almost gave up. Let it in. Almost didn’t find the strength or focus to pull away.”
  21.
  22. “He gave up?” she asked.
  23.
  24. “Victor has been struggling,” Moonsong was quiet. She sounded despondent, surprisingly so given how she’d never seemed to like Victor. “Gospel broke it off. I think he’s had a lot of self doubts. Loneliness.”
  25.
  26. Scribe watched, looking down. He was bigger than any of the nearby buildings. Anyone who got too close to him lost… everything, it seemed. Almost instantly. Knowing his power, a lot of it could be permanent.

  30. The Nemean Titan, and a series of circles drawn in the air around it. He slouched, arms long and hands wreathed in clouds of gold, with golden locks on his head that became crownlike at the top. Of all of the titans, he seemed to have the most of a face, with twists of golden hair forming gaps and patterns as they trailed across what would have been his face.
  31.
  32. He moved on all fours, fast, and put buildings between himself and us.
  33.
  34. We tripped an alarm, mobilizing like this.
  35.
  36. He was cowardly, hard to track, lighter and leaner than many of the Titans. Ten stories tall, maybe, and he scaled a skyscraper near the coast without toppling it, though rubble fell. Still halfway up it, peering over the top, he moved behind it, so the bulk of the skyscraper blocked our view of him, then leaped to one side.
  37.
  38. The building fell. He disappeared into the maze of fallen and half-fallen buildings. Kenzie's tracker started only intermittently working, updating on his location, presumably as others got a glimpse of him.

  42. Skadi appeared near me. I was anticipating her, and let myself fall, to buy myself seconds. She was a skyscraper filled with fury and violence, dropping in next to me with no warning, tipping my way.
