- What you'll learn
- - Notes and Bars
- - Tempo
- - Treble and Bass Clefs
- - Sharps and Flats
- - Scales and Chords
- Requirements
- - No previous musical experience needed. It is easiest to practice and apply these skills to an instrument such as a keyboard or piano. These instruments have a large variety of notes, keys, and clefs that can be played. If there is no instrument available, simply using your voice to find a note or pitch can still be valuable.
- Description
- For this course, the learner will be taken through the fundamental aspects of reading music and introduced to the structure of written music for all instrument types. The concepts covered range from the kinds of notes and symbols used, to how to differentiate between clefs and key changes. Additionally, the concepts of basic scales and sight reading are addressed, putting the music reading skill into practical application at a beginner level. Counting tempo and keeping the pace while reading music are critical components. This is covered thoroughly and will allow anyone to successfully interpret a musical transcript into understandable terms. This course is great for any student beginning in the band or choir, anyone looking to pick up an instrument as a hobby, or anyone simply curious about what the symbols mean in music transcriptions. The music used to instruct this course is at a beginner level, and there are no complex compositions used to illustrate essential concepts for the sake of simplicity. Applying this information is most easily done through an instrument such as a keyboard which can be manipulated to practice any concept covered. If no instrument is available, vocals can be used to practice finding a pitch, note progressions, and sight reading.
- Who this course is for:
- - This course is for individuals who have little previous experience with reading music and are looking to learn. This is great for anyone who is preparing to begin playing in a band, in school, or just picking up an instrument as a new hobby.
