Realizing he was about to be trapped by being backed up against a huge boulder, Kong took the only alternative and charged forward, grappling hand to hand with the larger beast. In a flash, Gaw’s teeth closed on his shoulder, and Kong bellowed in pain and rage.
Gaw’s powerful grip and greater heft gave her the leverage to position Kong’s body for a death bite. In a second Gaw would rip out the young Kong’s throat —
An explosion shattered the night, a flash of light, a tongue of flame, and Gaw screamed in pain as a slug big enough to kill an elephant crashed into her flank. More gunshots, and in the light of the burning longhouse, Ishara saw that Magwich, holding a huge, heavy thunderspear, and six other of his men, had formed a line and were firing at Gaw.
The monster thrust Kong away, and when Kong tried to grapple again, Gaw side-butted him with a jerk of her spiked head, sending him sprawling. With a “ferocious roar she crouched and spun, her head and tail leveling anything within its radius then turned and quickly limped for the Wall. Though wounded, the huge carnosaur covered the distance in a matter of a few short seconds. Magwich shouted an order, and his men trotted after Gaw.
Ishara ran to Kong, who struggled to rise. Blood flowed from wounds on his arm and shoulder, and he breathed hard. “Let me help,” Ishara pled.
Kong looked up, focused on her, then on the many warriors and torches converging from all angles. Growling, he shook his great head in an obvious attempt to clear it, then sprang up and ran after Gaw, passing the startled sailors and Magwich.
