The first giraffe Tarzan happened upon had its neck snapped so severely that the head lay at right angles to the body and three of the four legs were broken, thin femurs protruding from torn flesh.
“Look! Many Omtags lie dead,” insisted Nkima. “Zu-jar-bolgani he did this, Tarzan!”
Tarzan said nothing. He walked about the giraffe’s cooling corpse and took in the details of its destruction. A charging rhinoceros might have treated a giraffe so cruelly. A hippopotamus, also. But not even a bull elephant could have snapped a giraffe’s long neck in such a forceful manner.
