- Through the obscuring rain curtain, a towering tree with a great leafy ball of entwining branches showed dimly. With an eager grunt, Kong aimed for it. The trunk was massive, its crown sufficient to protect any who sought shelter beneath it.
- No doubt the fleeing egret was already safely ensconced within its greenery.
- Although expected, a pitchfork of lightning arrived with a suddenness that was a shock. Its flash of light was white and searing, forcing Kong to throw one scarred forearm across his startled features. The explosion that followed flung him backward, and made his small ears ring and ring.
- Stumbling, Kong toppled backward, landing hard.
- When his vision cleared, he blinked at the towering tree that promised relief from the rain. It was no longer there. The lightning bolt had blasted it apart.
- Broken branches were scattered everywhere. One bough had landed nearby, its bark stripped clean, like a snake that had shed its skin. Entwined in its sub-branches was the white bird that had sought refuge in its sheltering limbs. It was a smoking, charred thing now. Clambering to his feet, Kong fell upon that branch and whipped it skyward in a futile act of defiance. Then he shook a mighty fist at the threatening storm clouds marching along, as if daring them to unleash their elemental fury on him directly.
