- WannaCry infected PCs by exploiting a vulnerability in the Windows operating system known as EternalBlue. This vulnerability allowed the ransomware to spread rapidly across networks without requiring user interaction. Once a computer was infected, WannaCry encrypted the files on the hard drive and demanded a ransom payment in Bitcoin to decrypt them.
- The infection typically started when a user opened a malicious email attachment or clicked on a compromised link, but the worm-like nature of WannaCry meant it could also spread automatically to other vulnerable machines on the same network
