- Khaan shrieked as the spear bit into the flesh of his thigh. With a furious blow he struck the rider squarely in the chest, sending him sprawling off his mount, and “the man hit the ground in such a loose, inert way that Taigu realized he had died instantly.

The drak struggled to its feet and tried to gore him, but Khaan avoided the charge, giving its flank a thunderous clubbing. The cracking ribs were sickeningly audible and the drak squealed loudly, unable to keep its balance as it stumbled painfully down the hill on three legs.
