- The myriad jungle smells filling his nostrils, Kong lurched toward the opening, only to discover that his burly arms were stayed by steel manacles linked to heavy chains.
- Bringing up his hands, Kong glared down at them, saw the problem, and whether he understood it or not, responded through bestial instinct.
- One bristling fist wrenched up and around, and the great iron ringbolt that anchored the chain to its deck plate broke free. Now freed, blunt fingers dug at the opposite wrist, peeling apart the broad band of steel. First one, then the other restraint was torn loose. The superhuman ape made it look effortless.
- As broken linkages of chain went flying, Kong reared up, throwing his hands over his head and beating at the hatch doors above.
- One held, but the other flew up with great violence—only to come crashing down again, cutting off the light streaming down into the hold.
- Far above the voice of Captain Englehorn called out, “Mr. Driscoll! Mr. Driscoll!”
- Whatever else the Skipper might be saying was lost in Kong’s bestial roaring, for the gargantuan terror gorilla was gathering himself together, as yet unaware that one leg remained shackled.
- Driscoll and Denham turned and lunged for the wooden crate that held the great gas grenades. Together, they fought to get the lid up.
- A leathery-soled foot shot out, looking like a monstrous black hand with its crooked big toe suggesting a broken thumb, forcing the two men to leap aside in opposite directions.
- Frustrated by his inability to fully stand up, Kong rolled in the direction of open air and freedom. A flailing limb of hair and muscle was briefly inhibited by the final restraining chain, which Kong immediately seized and began worrying.
- The chain fought him, but the great prying fingers twisted, warped metal and finally two connected links snapped.
- “Unbelievable!” Denham shouted.
