  1. Gangleri began his questioning thus:
  2.
  3. ‘Who is the highest and most ancient of all gods?’
  4.
  5. High said: ‘He is called All-father in our language, but in Old
  6. Asgard he had twelve names. One is All-father, the second Herran
  7. or Herian, the third Nikar or Hnikar, the fourth Nikuz or
  8. Hnikud, the fifth Fiolnir, the sixth Oski, the seventh Omi, the
  9. eighth Biflidi or Biflindi, the ninth Svidar, the tenth Svidrir, the
  10. eleventh Vidrir, the twelfth lalg or Ialk.’
  11.
  12. Then Gangleri asked: ‘Where is this god, what power has he,
  13. and what great works has he performed?’
  14.
  15. High said: ‘He lives throughout all ages and rules all his
  16. kingdom and governs all things great and small.’
  17.
  18. Then spoke Just-as-high: ‘He made heaven and earth and the
  19. skies and everything in them.’
  20.
  21. Then spoke Third: ‘But his greatest work is that he made man
  22. and gave him a soul that shall live and never perish though the
  23. body decay to dust or burn to ashes. And all men who are
  24. righteous shall live and dwell with him himself in the place called
  25. Gimle or Vingolf, but wicked men go to Hel and on to Niflhel;
  26. that is down in the ninth world.’
  27.
  28. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘What was he doing before heaven and
  29. earth were made?’
  30.
  31. Then High replied: ‘Then he was among the frost-giants.’
  32.
  33. Gangleri spoke: ‘What was the beginning? And how did things
  34. start? And what was there before?’
  35.
  36.
  37. - Prose Edda, Gylfaginning
