  1. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘Where is the chief centre or holy place of
  2. the gods?’
  3.
  4. High replied: ‘It is at the ash Yggdrasil. There the gods must
  5. hold their courts each day.’
  6.
  7. Then spoke Gangleri: ‘What is there to tell about that place?’
  8. Then said Just-as-high: ‘The ash is of all trees the biggest and
  9. best. Its branches spread out over all the world and extend across
  10. the sky. Three of the tree’s roots support it and extend very, very
  11. far. One is among the Æsir, the second among the frost-giants,
  12. where Ginnungagap once was. The third extends over Niflheim,
  13. and under that root is Hvergelmir, and Nidhogg gnaws the
  14. bottom of the root. But under the root that reaches towards the
  15. frost-giants, there is where Mimir’s well is, which has wisdom and
  16. intelligence contained in it, and the master of the well is called
  17. Mimir. He is full of learning because he drinks of the well from the
  18. horn Giallarhorn. All-father went there and asked for a single
  19. drink from the well, but he did not get one until he placed his eye
  20. as a pledge. Thus it says in Voluspa:
  21.
  22. I know it all, Odin, where you deposited your eye, in that
  23. renowned well of Mimir. Mimir drinks mead every morning
  24. from Val-father’s pledge. Know you yet, or what?
  25.
  26. The third root of the ash extends to heaven, and beneath that root
  27. is a well which is very holy, called Weird’s well. There the gods
  28. have their court.
