- When she was a good distance away, she stopped and watched the entrance. Minutes passed and no one emerged from the lava tube. A prickling sensation on the back of her neck made her spin around with her gauntlet raised. She didn't immediately spot the threat. Instead Ak'kili acted on instinct. She dove to the side. As she fell, she finally spotted a heat signature close to the ground. Ak'kili fired an energy flechette at the signature and missed.
- The flechette struck the ground but her message was received. He knew that she'd spotted him. Ak'kili ran to a small rise and knelt behind it.
- He was too smart to stay in a compromised location. The question now was which way did he go? Ak'kili peered above the smooth crest. A hint of movement drew her attention to the right. She dropped back beneath the rise. A heartbeat later a smart disc flew through the space where her head had been a moment ago. The disc scraped the stone. She reached up and snatched the disc from above her head. Instead of stopping it, she pushed it further until it struck the stone behind her and was embedded so deep thatthe auto-recall wouldn't work. If he wanted it back, he'd have to come and get it. A loud roar echoed across the landscape. That roar most definitely belonged to Twakese. Ak'kili threw her head back and laughed. Twakese had just realized what she did and would be out for blood. All caution had been launched into orbit.-pg.171-172 chpt.7
